How do I get approval for the lower-cost options?
We recommend using one of two methods for gaining approval from your physician:
- If you have decided on an option and you feel comfortable trying the new medication, you can send your physician a fax requesting a prescription change. Include a printed copy of the Lower Cost Alternatives page, and note which option you prefer. Also write a short paragraph explaining why you are interested in changing medications, how you can be reached if your physician has any questions, and most importantly, how you want to receive your new prescription. For example, will you be picking it up? Do you want it called in to your pharmacist? Or would you prefer to have the prescription faxed back to you? Your physician receives a lot of these requests each day, so try to make your fax as clear and easy to process as possible.
- If you are unsure about switching medications, set up an appointment with your physician to discuss the alternatives. Be sure to bring a copy of the Lower Cost Alternatives page with you for reference.
